If your familiar with Delaware I am sure you've heard of the Sea Witch Festival, a highly- attended Halloween parade in Rehoboth Beach. What some may not realize is that this festive day is also a reference to a long-time folklore- The Sea Witch, also known as the bad weather witch. The story states that the sea witch is too blame for the countless shipwrecks along the Delaware coast, specifically the debraak which sunk in 1798 due to rough water and the shoals. She conjures up unnavigable waters and blinding rain, a captains nightmare. The story gained its notoriety in the 1930's when a group tried to extract the sunken ship the debraak. Apparently the weather wasn't cooperating and the frustrated men blamed the failure on the bad weather witch. I have heard versions that say that the Sea Witch churns up the water only when someone is trying to approach the sunken debraak's "treasure", I like this version because many attempts were made to recover items from the ship but were always rumored to be called off due to weather.  The ship was finally raised in 1986 and the sea witch tale continues to be a fun story to share around a beach bonfire.
