TEACH YOUTH THE POWER OF THE WAVES
VOCABULARY
Waves: the up and down movement of energy on the surface of water, Waves are powered by energy.
Energy: the invisible force that causes a thing to change or move
Current: the constant movement and push of water in an ocean, in a large circular path Waves and currents work together. Currents move in giant circles.
Tide: the alternate rising and falling of the sea, twice in each day caused by the movements of the moon and sun.
Tidal Waves: a wave caused by gravity- the sun, moon and earth’s rotation.
Rip Current: a powerful movement of water that pushes a swimmer out AWAY from the beach.
VOCABULARY
Swell: waves that form from strong winds blowing across the ocean’s surface.
Swells are created by storms. For example, “The storm created a swell that created big waves”.
Undertow: a current of water (the wave) that pulls you down to the ocean bottom.
Surface currents – these currents move along the edges of land, and are pushed by the wind and the earths rotation (coriollis effect).
Deep water currents – these currents are deep down underwater and are created by the temperature- how hot or cold the water temperature is.
Coriollis effect- when earth’s rotation causes wind to move in a curved path.
