Atlantic Jack Knife Clam | Ensis directus

The Jack Knife or Razor Clam, is a large species of edible marine bivalve mollusc. They are filter feeders that filter water through their shell in order to obtain food. Living in sand and mud, the clam burrows in the wet substrate. They are often found by pieces, one half of the outer shell or the outer shells with no clam inside. They are not very much of a sea-shellers favorite find as their shell is often flimsy and snaps easily. Their unusual oblong shape is what is most interesting to me and gave way to their name, Jack Knife as they resemble an old fashioned straight razor.
