Ghost Crab | Ocypode quadrata

The creatures of the night- Ghost Crabs are nocturnal, quick little crustaceans (they legit can scutter around at almost 10 mph) with round bodies and long legs. They are usually around 2 inches wide with big eyes that stick high off their body and have 360 degree vision.

Their coloring is often camouflage with the sand, making them hard to see unless they scutter past you. These crabs live on the beach burrowing holes that resemble an umbrella hole. They create pathways beneath the sand to hide from their predators and hibernate during winter months.

The female ghost crab lays her eggs in the breaking waves of the surf. The eggs then float along the water for up to six weeks before hatching.
