I am not one to pick favorites.... but Shark Eyes are my favorite.
Neverita duplicata, the Shark Eye Shell belongs to the marine mollusks family and looks well, just like a shark's eye.
. They can be cannabalistic creatures but will also munch on clams and muscles. These mollusks drill into shells to get their prey, you know when you find those white Ark shells with holes perfect for making a necklace ?
The Shark eye is a type of sea snail gastropub mollusks. When inflated with water, the mollusks body is usually three to four times larger than the shell. Amazingly, as it ejects the water, the shark eye can squeeze all it body parts back into the shell and then seal the opening with the operculum (the little door) When the Shark Eye meets its demise, its empty shell recycles to the ecosystem as a home for our friends the hermit crabs.
Shark Eyes are commonly found in low bay areas, sand bars and murkish muddy sand seem to be their favorite haunts.
Shark Eyes look very similar to Moon Snails. You can distinguish the difference by flipping it over and examining the bottom of the shell. On the bottom side of the shell, there is a center piece known as the umbilicus. The shark eye’s umbilicus is almost completely covered by a button-like lobe. The moonsail’s umbilicus is partially covered by a similar looking lope of the shark’s eye, but this one is white and shark eye’s is dark brown or grey.
